Apple to revamp iPod line say Kevin Rose

New Nano

Kevin Rose is breaking the news, more like yet another rumors. According to him, Apple plans to revamp the entire iPod line.

There will be small cosmetic changes to the Touch and Nano. On the Nano you get a long wide screen instead. There will price drops on iPods.

New iPod Touch and iPhone 2.1 software coming soon, maybe this time Apple will switch on it’s ‘push’ feature for other apps.

New iTunes 8.0, a big update with tons of new features.

Also Kevin Rose mention on his video that new OSX Leopard update coming and it will have build-in Blu-Ray support. So expect a new MacBook Pro with Blu-Ray drive.

As with all of Kevin Rose’s so called leads that he gets form his so called sources, it has been a miss. Well not entirely a miss.

When Kevin Rose talks about the first iPhone he gets the touchscreen right. When he talks about the second iPhone, he gets the 3G part right, no camera on the front for iChat video conferencing.

So there might be some truth in this. Anyway we love Kevin Rose, he is a geek and as much as an Apple fanboy just like us.

iPhone 3G coming to Singapore next week

SingTel has announced the availability of the iPhone 3G reports AppleInsider. Apple’s updated iPhone will go on sale on 22 August in Singapore in the second phase of its worldwide rollout.

“Thanks for your patience; we will bring in both the 8GB and 16GB versions with your choice of black or white,” SingTel vice president of consumer marketing Wong Soon Nam wrote in an email to subscribers. “At this stage we have not announced pricing. I will share it with you very shortly.”

With this announcement, it may turn out that Singapore would be the best place to get a legally unlocked iPhone 3G for Malaysians. My cousin in Singapore confirms that Malaysians can buy phone plans from SingTel without hassle. I’ve also been scouring the terms and conditions and FAQs for mobile plans on SingTel’s site. These terms are for all of SingTel’s phones, so I guess it’s safe to assume they will apply for the iPhone 3G too.

From my research, I can conclude:

  • You should be able buy the iPhone with a postpaid plan and terminate your plan early.
  • It may take a few days (see clause 2.2) to cancel and it will definitely cost you termination fees.
  • It is unclear if the phone will be unlocked, although at least 1 person on this myMUG thread says it will.

However we’ll need to wait until 22 August before we get any more details on pricing and terms. I have a feeling as well that SingTel may have limited units and would definitely prefer not to sell it to non-Singaporean buyers.

Till then, I’m planning to make a trip down on Merdeka weekend…

Apple Goes Green on Certificates.

Yes. And I have received the first one through my email, with a small note:

“Since environmental considerations are an integral part of Apple’s business practices, Apple Training and Certification is pleased to introduce a new Green certificate fulfillment process. Beginning August 1, paper certificates will no longer be sent to Mac OS X and Pro Apps students who pass certification exams. Instead, students will receive an email with a link to download a PDF version of their certificate at no charge. Students will be able to print these certificates, but we hope that most will choose to simply post the PDF certificates on their websites. This new system will be available worldwide.” - Apple Training

In the past, certified trainees & trainers will receive via a courier, a printed certificate, with a silver Apple Logo embedded on them and would look sleek in a frame.

As of now, this is what the certificate will look like and trainees have the option to print it themselves, on a recommended paper and printer-type:

So, I can foresee that my future training materials (eg. Books, notes) will be on PDFs as well; so more trees will be saved eventually!

Way to go Apple!

iSkin ProTouch keeps your MacBook keyboard clean and pristine

If you’re like me, you spend lots and lots of time on your Mac, not only working, but sometimes also eating and drinking. And if you don’t accidentally drop food crumbs on your keyboard, perspiration, dust and hair will cause the keyboard to become greasy and dirty, and even wear out the lettering over time.

Here’s what happened to my old iBook without adequate protection in the past:

With this previous experience, I was glad to get a chance to review the iSkin ProTouch for my MacBook.

The ProTouch is a high-quality silicon cover that’s molded to fit snugly over the MacBook’s keyboard. It even features Microban® protection to inhibit the growth of odor and stain causing bacteria on the keyboard.

No podcast for iTunes Malaysia

Ituneserror

I wanted to subscribe new podcast shows from the iTunes podcast directory, but I was not successful in doing so. All I got was a dialog box with the message: -

Your request could not be completed The item you’ve requested is not currently available in the Malaysian Store.

It was fine before when I have not yet registered to the iTunes Malaysian Store. I understand that the Music, Movies and TV Shows on iTunes Store are not available due to some non-cross borders copyright laws and such. However podcast are distributed freely across the Internet.

I think this is a bug in the iTunes Store.

You can add podcast feed manually by going to the advance menu and choose subscribe to podcast, then enter the URL to the podcast feed. But that is not how I wish to do it. I want to browse the podcast directory in the iTunes Store.

Anybody else have the same problem?

Blogging from iPod Touch

I am typing this blog entry from my iPod Touch. I wish I could say that I am at a remote exotic location while typing this, but I’m not. I am sitting infront of my PowerBook in my office cubicle.

I could use the machine infront of me to type this. I think it would be a lot more faster if I do, but I’m using my iPod Touch instead.

Why? Because I’m cool, my iPod Touch is cool, and the new Worspress app for iPhone and iPod Touch is cool.

Check out the Wordpress app on the iTunes App Store. You can even upload photos to your Wordpress blog. This is making me wanting an iPhone 3G even more.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed on iPhone

As much as I am an Apple fan. I am also a Star Wars fan too. Crunch Gear put up a cool video of the upcoming game, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed running on an iPhone.

The game makes use of the multi-touch screen on iPhone and iPod Touch. In the video you will see how different gestures produce different effects. However from the demo, gameplay and fighting are limited to force power, throwing things and people around while deflecting lasers. I would like to see more expect of the game play.

It is exciting to see the iPhone and iPod Touch system becoming a kickass portable gaming device.
