Maxis iPhone 3GS: 15 minute review

Immediately after the Maxis iPhone 3GS press conference yesterday, I scooted down to the iPhone roadshow at Gardens Mid Valley to get my grubby hands on a iPhone 3GS demo unit. There I sat hogging the latest piece of Apple technology to hit our shores for a good 15-20 minutes. Here’s what I found.

The first thing I wanted to test out was the iPhone 3GS’ new camera. Here’s a shot I took with it:

Not great but not unusable either. I wasn’t able to get a good shot because of the anti-theft device and the poor light inside the Gardens. I did however manage to touch to focus on the person near the stage. The autofocus was extremely easy to use and I immediately saw the focus change when I touched the screen. Very cool.
I also recorded a quick video, trimmed it down to half the length and then uploaded it to YouTube immediately. Here’s the result:

It’s not going to win any awards but I was impressed that the video trimming operation was extremely smooth. The iPhone did not lag at all and tapping the export button led me to sign in to YouTube and upload the video without a hitch.

The final test that I did was to turn off WiFi and download the SpeedTest app from the App store. Then I used the newly downloaded app to test the speed of Maxis’ 3G connection. Here are the results:

Not bad at all. In fact, these are super results when you compare them to my crappy Streamyx connection (100kbps down / 50kbps up).

So, in the 15 minutes I had the iPhone 3GS in my hands, I was definitely impressed and could feel the improvement over my current iPhone 3G. Maxis is right to be excited about this device–at the moment it seems that nothing else comes close.

More detailed reviews to come as the myMacBUZZ team get our iPhone 3GS to play with in the coming days.
