Taiwan another option for unlocked iPhone 3Gs

DigiTimes reports that Taiwanese iPhone 3Gs are being sold unlocked, and not restricted to only ChungHua Telecom as previously thought. DigiTimes says:

Prior to the launch last weekend, representatives from CHT and its retailers had said that iPhones bought in Taiwan would only work on its own network. However, when early adopters actually tried switching SIM cards they discovered that the phones operated fine on the other carriers’ networks, with the only limitation being they could not access CHT’s Hami value added web services.

So how much does an unlocked, contract-free, Taiwanese iPhone cost?

  • 8GB: NT$26,600 (RM2,799.58)
  • 16GB: NT$29,900 (RM3,146.90)

The exchange rate is presently1 MYR = 9.50142 TWD. Still cheaper to buy your unlocked iPhone from Hong Kong. However, these are official prices and the article did mention that the iPhone is available from resellers. This means that you’ll probably be able to bargain for the handset at the street corner and may get a really good price.
