iPhone firmware 2.2 update quick guide

Yes, it’s out and I’ve done it. Sorry for the late report. Here’s a pretty simple guide.
What you need for this guide:
- a Mac running OSX that support iTunes 8.0.x
- iTunes 8.0.x
- Quickpwn 2.2
- an iPhone running 2.x firmware with USB sync cable
Read before you begin
- As usual read about what Apple says about this update.
- iPhone 3G owner that waiting for software unlock, avoid 2.2 update.
- It’s known that some 3rd party app will not work on new firmware at the moment (just wait for updates).
- We take no responsibility if something went wrong with your iPhone during the process.
Step-by-step:
1. Connect you iPhone and launch iTunes.
2. Do a backup.
3. iTunes should detect there’s a new update for your iPhone which is 2.2, download and restore it (there’s no need to enter DFU, just use the official restore). This step will lock your phone again if it’s no official unlocked unit, don’t panic.
4. Once your iPhone restarted, setup the fresh iPhone in iTunes.
5. Once done, quit iTunes start Quickpwn.
6. Quickpwn will prompt you about selecting your phone model, then it should search the IPSW file.
7. Quickpwn will ask you do you want to have custom logo. Doesn’t matter what you pick.
8. After this Quickpwn will be busy creating custom firmware and send it to your iPhone.
9. Your iPhone will restart and show a huge Quickpwn logo with progress bar. Let it run.
10. Once complete your iPhone will be unlock (2G only) and jailbroken.
Enjoy!

congrats.. i cant wait to upgrade mine i’m using a 3g iphone, got it legally unlocked in aus and now am in a dilemma on whether to upgrade to 2.2 or not, especially after reading several posts that says that it may relock the phone, some say that it may relock if the update is done outside the country it got legal unlocked….. and some says it wont relock cos once it is legal unlocked, it wont relock back anymore. sigh. any idea?
Bert, I have a friend that using an official unlocked 3G iPhone from NZ. He did the update and everything seems to be fine according to him and he is still using Malaysia telco.
I do not have access to 3G unlock set so I can’t confirm the statement. You might have to wait for more feedbacks from other users before proceeding, there’re nothing much you’ll be missing from this update.
rgd,
wei
hi wei, i presume your friend did the update in Malaysia?
thanks for the info. guess, i’ll wait for more info before i do the update.
cheers.
Hi Bert,
I have a factory unlocked 3G iPhone bought from HK. I updated to the latest firmware 2.2 through iTunes (in Malaysia but with my iTunes Canada account, not that it matters) and yes, I can confirm everything is working fine.
I also updated my friend’s factory unlocked iPhone using his iTunes Malaysia account and his is also A-OK.
Update with impunity!
For those who are using a SIM-emulator (like TurboSIM, RebelSIM, etc.) to unlock their 3G iPhones DO NOT update as it will update your baseband and render your SIM emulators useless. At this time there is no way to downgrade the baseband.
For those with unlocked 2G iPhones, your baseband is not touched so you can update through iTunes and then run QuickPwn or Pwnage to jailbreak and unlock. (I can confirm it works as I have done so with my own 2G iPhone).
Good luck.
For those that would like to try the 2.2 update, please avoid leaving your own SIM in the iPhone. Swap it with the original SIM that came with your iPhone. For example AT&T SIM for the 2G iPhone from US. This might avoid iTunes locking your phone due to unsupported SIM.
I’m using a 2G iphone and updated to 2.2 (from 1.1.4) but there’s no service / carrier available after the update, how do i fix this problem?
Hi wei and echo… i have just updated my 3g iphone to 2.2… and it works perfectly! thanks for your assurances!
Charlie,
For 1.1.X, you need to use the Pwnage tool and create your own custom firmware instead. Because by jumping from 1.1.X with Quickpwn, your baseband will not be update, therefore causing no service / can’t connect to telco.
Hi guys,
i’m still deciding whether or not to get the 3G iphone from HK (unloked version)… there are rumours that a 32GB version may be released soon, although am not sure of the timing (i.e. before x’mas or next year).
any ideas?
Thanks
Charlie,
I recently updated a friend’s 1st Gen iPhone from 1.1.4 to 2.2 using Pwnage. Was also getting no carrier signal so I reset the network settings. After that, everything was working perfectly.
Victor,
Yes, 32GB NAND chips are expected to make it to the iPhone. However, it won’t be in production before Q1 2009 meaning its at least 4 months away. So it all depends on whether you can wait or not. A good reference for Apple’s product refresh cycle (for all of Apple’s products) can be found here…

Thanks echo… probably wont be out till Q3/Q4 then
not sure if i should wait. haha
hello i’m an iPhone 3G newbie. Somebody got it for me from Singapore. I don’t know if it is factory unlocked or legally unlocked. My iPhone firmware is 2.0.1 and I want to update it to 2.2. M from Brunei and we don’t have any iTunes store but i managed to get myself US iTunes account. Is it ok to update my firmware via iTunes and if no…any tips? Your feedback is highly appreciated!
Hi Lena,
Spore regulation does not allow sim-locked phones. To my understanding, the 2.2 firmware should work on your new iPhone 3G. Just update it through iTunes US.
Hope this helps.
oops… sorry, i meant network-lock phones… not sim-locked
So long as it is not jail-broken, then your iphone 3G should be able to update firmware through iTunes.
Lena, Victor is correct. S’pore iPhones are already unlocked. However do make sure that the handset is from Singapore. Then look at this post for more details:
