Should you buy an aluminium MacBook?

Aluminium MacBook

The new aluminium MacBooks introduced by Apple earlier last week has been getting mixed reviews. On the one hand, critics are raving about its aluminium body and graphics card, while Apple’s discussion forums have been filled with upset Mac users complaining about a range of topics.

So what’s the big deal about? Here’s a look at the pros and cons of the new MacBook so you’ll be a better informed customer when they become available in Malaysia early next week.

The Pros: Better Graphics and Smoking Looks

One of the major highlights of the new MacBooks is the Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics chipset. It still shares your MacBook’s RAM, but now has a dedicated graphics processing unit (GPU). What this means is that you can now reasonably play 3D games on your MacBook, hooray! MacWorld has published some benchmarks on the new MacBooks and they are suitably impressive.

The other selling point of the new MacBooks doesn’t really make it perform better, but it’ll draw some envious looks. That feature is the new aluminium body of course! The precision engineered unibody and full glass screen gives you the impression of a sleek race car and offers the benefit of increased durability and strength.

The Cons: Goodbye Firewire, hello DisplayPort

Long time Mac users will miss the lack of Firewire in the new MacBook, an interface that Apple has touted and encouraged for so many years. I myself purposely bought a Firewire external drive to free up the limited USB drives on the MacBook. Unfortunately I won’t be able to do so any more with the aluminium MacBook. The lack of Firewire also means that the aluminium MacBook can’t do target disk mode, which was pretty useful. This omission is the source of much outcry and some say that it is a deal-breaker. (What do you say? Tell us in the comments.)

Apple introduced another ‘innovation’ with their new line of portables: the DisplayPort. The mini DisplayPort on the MacBook replaces the mini DVI port. MacWorld points out the benefits of DisplayPort, but if you’re like me, you’re thinking to yourself that you now need another adaptor to plug your Mac into a regular projector. So budget an additional RM100 if you usually do presentations on your MacBook. Bah.

Price

In our current economic climate this is probably a big factor. The 2 higher-end old MacBooks were previously retailing for RM4,599 (white) and RM5,299 (black). The new aluminium MacBooks are now RM200 and RM600 more expensive for the 2 higher-end aluminium models. More price details.

Other Things to Consider

Some other things to consider before buying your sleek new aluminium MacBook..

No trackpad button. That’s right. The whole trackpad is the button now, so you click by clicking the trackpad. Try before you buy.

Glossy screens only. Because of the new all glass screens, the new MacBooks doesn’t come with a matte option. This is a big bother for some people, so again, try before you buy.

No Blu-ray. According to Steve Jobs, licensing Blu-ray is a “bag of hurt” at the moment so Apple would rather not offer a Blu-ray option.

  1. A quick look at the accessories I got for my MacBook:-

    Mini-DVi to VGA connector
    250GB FireWire drive

I still don’t understand why Apple does away with the FireWire port and introduces an “industry standard” DisplayPort.

Did they get the thing wrong? FireWire is the industry standard while DisplayPort is not, since only the MacBooks use them.

I’ll be asking Tony Li about this on 23rd October.

  2. I’ll get one. The 2.0Ghz Macbook.

Why? I’ve been saving and waiting so long for a new laptop. and i’m a switcher..

and firewire doesn’t give me a problem since i dont have any device on that port.

  3. I would love to have one. The new MacBook is just nice for those that already have a desktop Mac. And still want a portable but doesn’t want to lose much on performance. Not so nice for those that want a laptop that double up as desktop.

I think Apple done right on this refreshment. Regarding the firewire port part, let’s hope we’re on transition to something better, Firewire1600 or Firewire3200 for the pro, and finally Firewire800 for the consumer. Regarding BluRay, recordable media is still overly priced. Not to mentioned they’re still struggling to get it out on usable speed. 2x for 25GB that gonna take a long while, and how much battery life we talking here?

I think we are asking too much for a worthy 12″ Powerbook G4 replacement that cost below RM5k.

  4. The trackpad is actually VERY nice. I’ve always liked the trackpad on my Macbook and today I’ve tested the new Macbooks, I fell in love with it.

The whole trackpad is the button, i thought it was a touch sensitive button. The tactical feedback was really good and there is only one spot where you cant click, the top most part in the middle as there is where the hinge for the trackpad is.

I played with both the Macbook and the Macbook Pro this morning and my short take will come in right after deepavali as I am really Really REALLY busy this week.

Oh yeah, it’ll arrive in Malaysia hopefully in the beginning of November, still pending SIRIM’s approval.

  5. armand

    i own a 2.0 alu macbook.
this is my first mac. switch from pc.
there is no backlight on 2.0 model :(
not test with any games yet.. dunno how the perfomance of graphic card

  6. AMD

When you are using a windows at least you can crack the softwares you need and using them without paying any penny…
    Any idea about Mac?

  7. i own an alu too. yeay armand! have you tried backlight on the caps yet. i dont like the look. the lighting spread all over it. i want it too be decent. i means i want the light on the wordings only not all over the keys. i hate it.

but its cool features though. when i bought mine, they dont have 2.4 available for buy yet. calculating a hefty rm1100 for backlighting may not worth it. so i decided to buy whole range of other product with that money (express and time machines). will be getting extra ram. not that i need it. yet..

and im confuse. i never use trackpad button before. why did you need it for anyway? asking politely that is.

to AMD > yes. they have their own crack. just like windows but maybe simpler. most of them use patches. i already used a full version CS4.

  8. You’re right about Display Port. It can be a little tricky sometimes to find the peripherals you need.
