Short review on the new iPod Touch
Sorry for the delay of this review. I was bed ridden because of a recurring back problem. Anyway, let’s get on with the review.
iPod Touch (32GB) Second Generation Review
It was really interesting unpacking the iPod Touch. There was a sticker on the main screen of the iPod Touch where you have to peel off before “releasing” it. Oh yeah, the iPod Touch comes in a plastic box instead of a cardboard box like the first generation iPod Touch.

Smaller plastic box

Box Opened

Sticker had to be peeled.
I was required to slightly bend the plastic holder that was holding the iPod Touch. Underneath the iPod Touch was the accessories. I am amazed that Apple could fit in so many things in a tiny box like this.

Instructions to bend the plastic holder.

The crammed all these into a small box!
At first glance, the new iPod Touch looked more like the iPhone now with it’s chromed sides as oppose to the matte grey ones on the first generation iPod Touch. A very noticeable difference is that the new iPod Touch is thiner than the old when when it’s in your hands, thanks to the contoured back, just like the iPod 3G.

I particularly liked the built in speaker, as well as the volume buttons. You don’t have to go through the Home screen to change volume anymore. You can leave the iPod Touch in your pocket and adjust the volume on-the-fly. The speaker is slightly louder than the one on my iPhone but there’s nothing much to shout about. The audio comes out from the 30 pin port. It’s still not loud enough in a noisy mamak.

The unit came with firmware 2.1.1 and it is really smooth. My iPhone’s 2.0 firmware is a bit buggy and slow but after using the iPod Touch, I feel like updating my firmware.
Anyway, I won’t be typing too much here since you guys are well versed with the iPod Touch via various reviews on the internet. Just post a comment and what you want to know and I’ll try to answer it. Expect the iPod Touch to be in stores on 1st October. Just in time for your duit raya spending.

wow! i looks so nice.. waiting for it to be available in JB
btw, does anyone know where can we do laser engraving for iPod? Apple Singapore do it for FREE when purchase online… I would like to write “Happy Birthday” behind it
Hi Justin,
My ipod touch won’t go beyond software license screen on the itune…any recommendation? I tried reset my ipod and ran diagnosis test which shows no probelm but I still cannot sync and download itune into my ipod
heavendust: the easiest way is to get someone to buy it for you in singapore. since you are in JB, it’s the fastest way me thinks.
I dont know anyone that can laser engrave in malaysia though.
John: i thought wei answered you question? anyway, is your internet working and is your itunes updated? can you go on to ITMS and get an account?
Hi Justin,
Unfortunately Wei did not answer my question, I did not get any error message. It just stay at the Software licence agreement page… I was told we cannot create account with Apple as Malaysia is not one of the country listed under Itune.
Malaysia is listed under iTunes. Is your iTunes the latest version?
Update your iTunes first before anything else.
I would like to know… What do you do for living? How do you loan the new product straight from apple malaysia? Do you work for apple?
cahtmonchy: I do not work for Apple. I am one of the editors of an IT Magazine in Malaysia. Apple Malaysia loaned the units to us for a review.
The full review will be in my magazine, that’s why I can only write a short review on myMacBUZZ.
I figured it’d be unfair if I gave a full review on myMacBUZZ since Apple loaned it to the magazine and not myMacBUZZ.
However, publicity is good for them and I’m pretty sure Apple Malaysia wouldn’t mind.
Hi Justin, My Itune was just updated and in fact I even reinstall again…but still does not work. My old Ipod work fine with the Itune. I also tried to reset my 2nd generation Ipod both hardware and software wise..still does not work. Any more advise I can try?
Justin,
I just checked my Itune is version 8 so that’s the latest one already……
I got a iPod touch 8GB edition. Been falling in love with it every time I load a new app from the App Store.
Too bad, you can’t find any protective film for the new model yet as the current available ones were either too small (iPod touch 1st gen) or doesn’t match (iPod 3G). The shiny rear is easily exposed to scratches. Just have to wait a while longer.
The Malaysian iTunes store allows you to download only apps. Try the free Remote and it allows you to remotely control your iTunes (Mac or Windows) wirelessly. Simply amazing. Planning to try with AirTunes if I can lay my hands on a Airport Express.
Also try the free 60-day subscription to MobileMe. It automatically syncs all your contacts, calendar, bookmarks from your Windows/Outlook/IE (and Mac OS X, of course) to the iPod touch!! No more docking, no more hard-wire synching anymore.
Hi Drewy,
Congratulations for being one of the few first to lay your hand on the 2nd Gen Ipod…wonder if you can help me with my problem as described earlier ? Thks
Hi John,
Did you try on other computers with iTunes v8? If it doesn’t work as well, it could be a firmware problem.
Hi Drewy,
Thks for your speedy response…Yes, I have also tried on my laptop apart from my PC…unfortunately the same thing came up.
John: Don’t you wanna consider bringing yours back to the reseller and tell them about the problem? They could probably help you flash the ROM with the firmware once again. If all fail, you should request for a replacement unit.
Hi Drewy,
I was wondering where you got your 2nd Gen Ipod Touch from? I’ve been waiting for it to arrive at the stores here for 2 weeks now and I was told that it will take 2 more weeks before the stock arrives
Hi, how much does one costs? Roughly?
Hi everyone,
I have been waiting for weeks for the 2nd Gen Ipod Touch to be available in Malaysia.
Has anyone actually bought one from a shop in Malaysia?
Anyone any idea when they will arrive? Especially the 16GB version.
Thanks
Hi Lee Hock Hin,
I called Switch @ Sogo today and they told me they sold 20 units of Ipod Touch yesterday. If you place an order with them you will get it before 1pm on Wednesday…Not sure how true it is though..
I have yet to see any in stores. Was told that they’ve come in, but have all been reserved and sold to other ppl.
Does anyone know how to order one from another country like the U.S. or Australia with a Malaysian credit card and have it sent to an address in Malaysia? Seems like there are some Customs shipping restrictions on electronics to Malaysia. Either that or they don’t ship directly to Malaysia and I’ll have to use freight forwarders. Any suggestions?
To Ed,
If you want to buy, i can arrange for you. I just got one from Singapore with Laser Engraving. But it will charge an extra RM100 for Laser Engraving and Shipping.
Example: I bought an 16 GB one. Cost RM1,229.00 + RM100.00 = RM1,329.00
I think it still worth cos i have it laser engraved with my own words
I wrote “Dear, Happy 21st Birthday, from your love heavendust”
and as i know, there are no laser engraving service in Malaysia. Makes my iPod Touch gift so special
Got mine the other day, 23rd Oct. Finally! Nice device. ONLY real issue is that it won’t charge with a normal USB charger. Needs to have a computer (with iTunes installed?) OR need to use the special iPod charger from Apple. Very mah fun.
Today is 29-OCT-2008, i have been pre-ordered my iPod Touch 2 Generation 32 GB for month now, still the product is NOT yet avaliable here in Malaysia. I have personally called Apple Malaysia up, and they told me that the iPod Touch 2 Generation will only be on sales by end of this month (OCT-2008) OR early NOV 2008. Oh my God, what the HELL is wrong with apple malaysia management? by the way, iPhone 3G is still NOT avalible officially in Malaysia. What a TOTAL sucks..!!
I don’t think they can help it. Any new devices with telecommunication components such as WiFi requires certification of approval from SIRIM.
We can’t wait either. I got mine from the States while a colleague of mine got his in Singapore.
Why can the certification process from SIRIM be more efficient? It is all about the working cultre here in Malaysia,
especially the majorities. As a result, the public of Malaysia, we just have to sit and wait.Editor says: Racist comments are not tolerated CKYUN.
I pre-ordered mine about a month ago from SenQ Ipoh. So, all the SIRIM certification must have been OKed.
You might get lucky at SenQ Pyramid Sunway. Give them a call. They give pretty good service.
I have called up my supplier and they promised me in early NOV 2008. I really hope no more dramas around this time, really can’t tolerate with Malaysian’s attitude.

Laser engraving is cool and great for gifts but it’s for myself and I guess I wouldn’t want to fork out the extra for it. But thanks for the offer!
Drewy
When you got yours from the States, did you have any trouble with Customs bringing it in? What’s that about SIRIM? No trouble there either, without the SIRIM sticker?
I just got mine,(d 8gb one)on wednesday(29.10) I got it free of charge, won it from a contest.
now looking for casing and screen protector, any recommendations? I’m a new user. no prior experience with iPods.

Eepp. I think that fella has either got his hands on the device or migrated to another country. Speaking of the ipod, does anyone seems to be having trouble with the wi-fi?
anybody knows the prize in malaysia
http://www.machines.com.my/product_ipodtouch.php
that’s the price list from Machines.
I went to Machines mid valley recently to get a casing, not many choices at all.
While there, met this lady who bought hers from MacStation at Low Yat. Have y’all tried there? Machines has it also. Call them and ask if they still have stock.
Guys (Diyana in particular), i’m using this silicon protector called Coolcase for my 2G 16GB iPod touch… I bought it for M$69.00 from Mac City in 1Utama and it also comes with a screen protector…
Quite a great deal and it fits my touch perfectly!
RM69? so cheap. i wasted 100+ on my casing. will write about it on my blog soon. any pics to show Tan?
