MacBook Air

MacBook Air was released about 20 minutes ago at MacWorld 2008 by Steve Jobs.
Dubbed the thinnest notebook in the world at only 0.4cm - 1.94cm in thickness, the MacBook Air is set to take portability into new heights.
Specifications are as follows:
- Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6GHz or 1.8Ghz
- 2GB RAM standard
- 80GB hard drive, 64GB SSD hard drive optional
- 13.3 inches wide screen with LED backlighting
- MultiTouch trackpad
- iSight
- Full sized keyboard with backlight illumination
- Wireless 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1
- Built in mono speakers
- o.4 - 1.94 x 32.5 x 22.7 (cm, H x W x L)
- 1.36kg
The standard configuration will cost USD$1,799 and another USD$99 add on if you want to add on an external SuperDrive.
My take on the MacBook Air? It’s AWESOME. I don’t know how they built the thing in such a thin chassis, but they did it nevertheless. It could even fit in an envelope, as demonstrated by Steve Jobs. The inclusion of the MultiTouch technology, as seen on iPhones and iPod Touch, is great as well. The trackpad works like the touchscreens on iPhones and iPod Touch now.
However, the price of USD$1,799 is a bit pricey. It’s only slightly cheaper than the MacBook Pro, a full fledge notebook.
Leave us a comment on what you think about the MacBook Air. Yay or Nay?
P.S. Apple’s site is updated with MacBook Air’s page, head on over to look at it.

Oppsss it looks like you beat me to it
It’s an awesome machine, wonder how it’s gonna be when there is no CD/DVD drive,… May be apple is setting another trend.
For USD1700 these days you can get a notebook that comes with competent graphics. Why, I just bought a Presario that comes with an Nvidia 8400m. Given that the CPU is only a 1.5GHz C2D I was really stoked to find that it scores over 2200 in 3DMark05. Had I bought the 2GHz MacBook as I previously planned, I’d still be stuck in the 900 point ballpark.
But who cares about what’s under the hood anyway, right?
AppleTraitor, if you want a notebook with competent graphics, you get the MacBook Pro.
@jibone There is no CD/DVD drive. Steve Jobs said people will forget it sooner or later. It uses Remote Optical Drive, aka shared optical drive.
@Justine Yes I know there is no optical drive. There is not even an external drive in the box, sold separately.
That is why I said may be it’s another industry trend for laptops Apple is setting. Remember Apple was the first to remove floppy drive from their machines
@jibone I am kinda new to the whole Apple thingy lah…hehe..
But I don’t think that the optical drives will die like floppy so soon. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are kinda agressive lately.
@Ian: Why would I pay over 7000 bucks, when for way less price than the lowest end MacBook I could’ve bought an Inpiron 1420 with dedicated graphics? Anyway I already bought my Presario for even less $$$ and it came with the specs mentioned above. And I didn’t pay a premium for the black finish either. I guess Apple just doesn’t cater to my demography. It’s a shame.
@AppleTraitor: Then again it boils down whether you wanna use the mac osx or not, people dont mind spending money to get apple lappies or desktops not because of the hardware its because of the osx which is much more superior the the next sluggish windows system,i cant run my tiger or leopard os on a much cheaper presario can i now?
hi all, please note that the MacBook Air price will be recommended to retail for RM6,299. Official price from Apple Malaysia. Quite interesting. Of course, looks like a few weeks out before shipping to Malaysia? Good competition for Vaios in any case, and a good intermediate between MacBook and MacBook Pro prices, IMO.
to AppleTraitor… for apple die hard fan.. rm 6-7k is just a small invest.. ppl wont bother about dell / sony / benq / ftec . etc. its a an afordable laptop to buy.. but if u popup macbook air at public.. sure u gonna hear “whoaaa , its apple’s brand” well, honestly macbook air is abit silly if u compared to macbookpro (conectivity/drive storage) but, at the trend goes on .. ppl will forget the optical disc like the past floppy disc. again the question is .. is it worth for the money?? well it is depends on the usage of the person itself.. and plus how much money they have,, apple isnt for the budget tight person..
Almost 6 months in the market now.. So, how’s the price now? I’m considering buying but not exactly a ‘budget-free’ person, but have budget.
Any comments on performance so far? TIA!
