Adobe doesn’t like case-sensitive

I tried installing Adobe Photoshop CS3 on my brand new Leopard system, and all I got was a cryptic message that says :-

System Requirements Error This software cannot be installed because the file system of the OS volume is not supported.

After doing some research on the net, Googling, I’ve found out that Adobe Photoshop CS3 will not install itself on a case-sensative filesystem. I’ve never thought such issue existed.

I’m not a complete weirdo as most seems to think I am. There is a reasonable reason of why I choose a case-sensative filesystem when I did an erase and install with Leopard. I work on Linux system, most of the time when I’m not on OSX. Linux has a case-sensitive filesystem, so it make sense to have my OSX formated with a case-sensitive filesystem.

Case-sensative filesystems, a simple explanation would be a filesystem that are smart enough to know the different between “Apple” and “apple” or “aPPle”. Apparently this concept is too confusing for Adobe and it’s engineers.

The solution, as suggested by this, oh so very informative, Adobe’s knowledge base article 400587, is to reformat your OS disk with a case-insensitive filesystem. Figuring this issue out, backing up all my files and re-installing Leopard, that’s a day a day from my life I’ll never gat back. Thanks Adobe.

  1. I also have tried many time installing Photoshop CS3… still can install it. But, I manage to install Adobe Dreamweaver CS3…

So, for now I need to reinstall my OS?

  2. If your MacOSX is on a case-sensative filesystem, then reinstall (erase and install with the option to create a non case-sensative filesystem) is the only solution I found to be working at the moment

  3. Unbelievable !

I just bought Elements 6 and it is exactly the error I ran into. I wish I had known that beforehand - hopefully I can give it back, cause I won’t be bothered to let an application tell me which way I have to format my harddisk.

Furthermore I find it very unsatisfactory to have an application that I can’t drag where it is installed to.

I, too, just ran into this design error. I, too, run Linux at home (and at work) and am quite familiar with case-sensitivity. I’m completely baffled why this would be a show-stopper for the smart people at Adobe.

I was planning to do an OS reinstall anyway (long story), so I guess I’ll take this opportunity to do it the wrong cough err, the ‘right’ way. :P
