New MacBook prices reduced
Here’s another reason for getting a new MacBook now instead of later. Apple Malaysia has dropped the prices of the recently updated MacBooks by RM200 to RM300.
The new MacBook prices are as follows:
- MacBook 2.0 White - RM4199
- MacBook 2.16 White - RM4999
- MacBook 2.16 Black - RM5699
The new MacBooks are in stock now at machines Mid Valley and CG Computers in Penang. (I’ll update this list as I confirm more locations. If you’re from a local Apple reseller, please feel free to update me at buzz[at]mymacbuzz.com)
So, despite what what ITWire says about this latest update being a ‘bare minimum hardware upgrade‘, the new specs and lower prices do make it more attractive to consumers. Plus, I’m impressed that Apple Malaysia dropped the MacBook prices, especially when they’re still retailing for the same old price in the US. Wonder if this means other Apple products in Malaysia will be more affordable soon..?

I think this price drop is long overdue, considering the decline of the US Dollar vs Ringgit Malaysia. The entry-level MacBook, for instance, is about RM3,736 when directly converted from its US price. That means it still costs significantly more here, without even taking into consideration the general income level of Malaysians.
The iPod’s excuse is that the Malaysian government imposes a tax of about 20% on such devices, but unless I’m mistaken, computers aren’t taxed.
Nonetheless, any price decrease is welcome. Hopefully this means the price of other Apple products will also come down as they are updated. Only then will iPods and Macs garner a bigger marketshare here.
Brian, unless I’m mistaken, iPod isn’t a computer, and therefore may be subject to your mentioned tax. But yeah it seems that every Apple product here is always at a premium compared to the ‘original’ prices.
