Apple updates MacBook in time for 1st birthday

Apple has updated its MacBook line with faster processors and more RAM and disk space as the MacBook turns one year old today.

New MacBooks

The three MacBooks in the line have been upgraded to 2.0GHz and 2.16GHz (white) and 2.16 GHz (black) processors respectively while prices remained the same. All three models now come standard with 1GB of RAM and the latest version of AirPort Extreme featuring 802.11n wireless networking.

Apple introduced the MacBook a year ago to replace its iBook lineup. Earlier this week, Macrumors.com reported on the possibility that five new MacBook configurations would be introduced this week.

Update: ITWire out of Australia has some different opinions of the MacBook updates. They say that this wasn’t a true update and Apple only gave a “bare minimum” hardware upgrade since it does not include the new Santa Rosa chipset from Intel. In turn, a spokesperson from Apple Australia responded by reminding them that the MacBooks already include some key features of the Santa Rosa chipset like 802.11n and faster 667Mhz memory. Still, ITWire persists and says:

If you’ve been wanting to buy a Mac right about now, the upgrades come at a perfect time, giving you more bang for your buck right off the bat. But if you’re waiting for the true next-generation of Mac notebooks, that time has sadly not yet come, with the current update looking a bit like an attempt to clear out existing hardware before a range of rumored all singing, all dancing and shiny new models appear with OS X 10.5 pre-loaded towards the end of the year

Having thought about it, I would agree with ITWire. By updating the MacBook line now, Apple will probably not update it again (and leave out the Santa Rosa chipset in the process) for another 6 months. Either way,I’d rather wait till WWDC to see if Apple introduces any new hardware.
