Pimp your desktop with GeekTool
Nick Young is a blogger who recently switched to the Mac right after Macworld last January. He has been blogging about his experience at his really nice blog called Keynote2Keynote.
Recently he blogged about GeekTool, a utility that allows you to display all kinds of information right on your Mac desktop. I first heard of it when Merlin Mann described GeekTool as a way to build your own ‘Batcave’. However I never really played around with it until Nick emailed me about how he pimped out his desktop with GeekTool.
I downloaded and played with GeekTool again and I gotta say, it’s really cool. I always have Activity Monitor open to keep an eye on my active apps’ memory and CPU usage. With GeekTool, I can now monitor not only my system resources, but also my Mac’s uptime, system logs, diskspace and all sorts of Unix command outputs.
It does this by overlaying text and even image output on your Mac’s desktop. Mine’s a bit too messy to show so I’ve included Nick’s screenshot below so you have an idea of what GeekTool can do.
So remember to check out Nick’s Pimp Your Desktop series (Part 1 and Part 2, Part 3 coming soon?) and try out GeekTool. Also, here’s another blog post with a couple more commands for GeekTool you may find useful.
P.S. Sorry for the late post Nick, but I was caught up with PC Fair and another project that I’m launching this Saturday.
