Twitter

Umm, yeah. Here’s an entry that’s not really about Macs, but about Twitter, the latest fad/meme/craze that’s hit the web in recent weeks. I’ve just signed up and it’s my new favourite pastime.

For those of you who don’t know what Twitter is, here are two ways to think of it:

  1. A status message that you can broadcast across the web to friends.
  2. A blog with one-sentence per entry

Besides posting your ‘tweets’ from the Twitter website, there are also other ways you can interact with it from your Mac.

First, you can post to Twitter via instant messaging clients that support Google Talk, e.g. Adium, Gaim and iChat. Set your Google Talk ID in Twitter’s preferences, then add twitter@twitter.com to your buddy list. Now you can send tweets by simply sending an IM.

Next, you could also download the excellent Twitterific. Twitterific is a cute client for OS X from the Iconfactory that allows you to post tweets and update you when your friends post tweets too (if you’ve allowed it). Its designers have made it to be as clean and concise as possible to take up a minimum on your Mac desktop.

My favourite way though is to use Quicksilver (you can tell I’m a real Quicksilver fan now). The original Applescript was written by Coda Hale. Then Ted Leung modified it and added Growl support so that Quicksilver notifies you once your tweet is successfully posted.

Once you’ve signed up for Twitter, browse around for your friends. I even found Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ive on Twitter. If you’re still not convinced about Twitter, what about if I told you that Jon Ive let slip on Twitter that the iPhone was coming in April instead of June?

Make sure to add me when you’ve signed up. Have fun! (Last of all, I’m pretty sure that Jon Ive on Twitter is a fake, so don’t get too excited ok?)
