Vista switching Windows users to Mac

I just read this review titled “Uninspiring Vista” that was featured on the Apple Hot News page. Yup, the Apple Hot News website.

So what’s a Windows Vista review doing on the Apple website? Well, because it’s a lousy review of Vista haha. But more importantly, Vista made the author, Erika Jonietz, decide to switch to Mac.

Ironically, playing around with Vista for more than a month has done what years of experience and exhortations from Mac-loving friends could not: it has converted me into a Mac fan.

Besides the fact that Vista is beautiful (her words, not mine) and has got some new tricks, Erika realises that Vista is basically copying features from Mac OS X, is a resource hog, is making PCs more expensive, and it doesn’t “just work” like on a Mac.

I found the review it to be quite interesting while the discussion comments following it was really entertaining. “Apple runs this site?.. and wrote the review?” says one commenter. The comments turned into a full-out flame war, and who doesn’t like reading flame? Check it out.

DRM the killer?

Peter Gutmann’s paper, “A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection” which talks about Vista’s tyrannical DRM implementation has also drawn much attention during the past few weeks. If you’re not familiar with it, do give a listen to Episode 74 of the Security Now podcast by Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte. It’s great ammunition to tell your friends not to upgrade to Vista and switch to Mac. Get this – Vista’s DRM can allow the media producers (Hollywood) to reach into your PC and disable playback of HD content remotely. How insane is that??

However, I’m afraid that this DRM will eventually find its way into the Mac platform. Hollywood has a loud voice in the PC industry and they may cause all sorts of problems for OS X even. Leo thinks that perhaps the Apple TV was Apple’s pre-emptive move to keep DRM off the Mac platform and onto another more dedicated media platform.

Whatever it is, I’m not using Vista if I can help it and I’m all for Vista if it’ll switch Windows users over to Mac.
