Apple to impose 802.11n unlocking fee

Incase you haven’t notice, Apple has been quietly shipping Macs with build-in Wi-Fi card that supports the draft 802.11n specification. The Mac systems that are currently shipping with 802.11n cards are Core 2 Duo MacBook, Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro, Mac Pro with AirPort Extreme, and Core 2 Duo iMac.

The support for 802.11n on these Macs however is inactive. It seems that you will need an “AirPort Extreme 802.11n Enabler 1.0″ patch. Apple Insider has confirmed that Apple will be imposing some fees to those wish to unlock their 802.11n. Why this doesn’t just comes to you via Software Update, is beyond me.

Apparently there are some explanation on why Apple making such a move over at iLounge. It involved lawyers, some laws and accounting, which all sounds ridiculous to me.

If you planing to get one of those slick new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station, it comes with the 802.11n software enabler patch for you Macs.

  1. a fee? really? a fee? that seems a bit outrageous shaking fist in air

  2. Apparently Apple was force to do that because of some silly law that doesn’t allow you to add features that was not advertise on the product or something like that.

It’s like saying you shipped an unfinished product or some sort, I don’t really understands this Tax and law stuff.

  3. [...] This might just be a similar case with the issue of Apple charging around USD $1.99 for a software update to enable Macs with 802.11n. [...]
