Apple iPhone’s endless possibilities
Apple just reinvented the mobile phone. Some are calling it the Palm, SmartPhone, Windows Mobile killer. Some are even suggesting its as Newton2.0. There is even a fun speculation saying that the multi-touch device is ever a PSP killer and could take on even the Nintendo DS.
Here is what, one Apple fanboy (me) thinks about the phone and what it might be capable of. The new mobile phone Apple introduced has a lot of possibilities. Just like the iPod, it has the potential to be more.
First of, the user interface leaves room for other wonderful possibilities. As how Steve Jobs put it in his keynote, the device interface is not limited to it’s buttons and controls. They have solve the problem by having no buttons and just one big touch-screen. It could have whatever button they want, each application could has it set of controls. This makes it possible for some interesting applications on the device.
Next, if Apple want to do it right, they will let third party developer to develop on it. My prediction, there will be a new version of Xcode with iPhone emulator and SDKs for developing apps for iPhone, ‘Cocoa mobile’ maybe? Now that would make things interesting. The phone has OSX with all the goodies like Core Animation and all. You might just see it at the next Apple’s WWDC.
Who knows, maybe you could run Skype and turn it into an IP-phone whenever you have WiFi access. You might also be able to use Adium. Lets hope Apple open up the phone for other developers.
The phone also has a full-blown Safari (webkit) Internet browser. You might be able to run some Web2.0 sites or use some of the web service. The keynote demo, shows how the phone uses Google Maps. Instead of creating it’s own map software, they just create a widget that uses Google Maps web service APIs. The iPhone might just be the device that takes web2.0 mobile.
Another interesting note is that the device has WiFi. Not sure if this is possible but if it is that it’s pretty damn cool. With build in WiFi you might be able to create an ad-hoc connection with other phone. You could then browse other people’s playlist and listen to their songs steaming from their phone just as you could currently with your iTunes.
This could be done seamlessly using Bonjour, the current Apple technology that makes networking simple. You browse other’s playlist, listen to a song you like, connect to iTunes Store purchase the song, and as Steve would put it, ‘Boom!’ you got the song. Sync the phone with your Mac at home and you got the song in your iTunes library. Welcome to the real social, beat that Zune.

Anyhow I think there is a bright future for this device. No wonder Steve Jobs was so excited to introduce it, and spend almost 2 hours talking about it. You know the phone is staying for the long run as Apple has give the device it’s own ‘tab’ on their site.

Skype is definitely a big possibility. Shouldn’t be too hard to run the existing Skype on Mac on iPhone, maybe they just change the APIs a little and it should run fine. Give it another few months and we’ll see a gazillion software being made for the iPhone.
I remembered when Handspring came out with the Treo with a keyboard my first reaction is : they blew it. Why put buttons and add complexity? That is Microsoft’s department. Then Handspring was swallowed by Palm, and to complicate things further, Palm OS and Palm are different entities. What a stupid mess.
All this while I was convinced that it is going to be Apple that will set this right again if they ever ventured in PDA/phone. It took many years, and I was relieved I was correct.
I’m afraid, Skype and other VoIP applications are the reason why Apple won’t release an SDK any time soon. Apparently, they made a long term commitment to Cingular to include the Visual Voicemail feature. Cingular will not be pleased, if their customers cirumvent their phone services by using free VoIP channels. WWDC 2008 might be a possible release date for an iPhone SDK, if ever. Meanwhile, we’re stuck with Web 2.0 apps, those will probable work pretty well. Given that most “Smartphones” have some sort of µOffice included, I’d not be surprised if the AppleGoo cooperation includes free access to Writely, Blogger etc. Just think about the possibilities!
Hey guys, getting excited here are we? Unfortunately I think Snaro is right too. Apple and especially Cingular will never let consumers install VoIP apps on the phone. That’s probably why the phone only comes with EDGE and not 3G.
Someone will come out with a hack for it I’m sure. Can’t wait for it to come to Asia!
You’re right. I totally forgotten about the contract with Cingular. However, by the time it reaches here i think it might be available.
Perhaps Apple themselves might release more software later on.
.. as for the Google office apps, I think it’d be a bit of a let down if you have access to office apps ONLY through wifi networks though.
Also, I can imagine them making a huge dent in PSP’s market and probably already totally destroyed the Zune. (I can hear all those people who got Zunes as Christmas presents moaning)
Yup, the long term commitment to Cingular will complicated things for an open iPhone SDK. I still feel we will see something at the next WWDC, the iPhone is dying for third party software.
And yeah iPhone might just destroy Zune, it’s a big screen iPod with Wi-Fi,.. and plus you can make calls.
100% I understand, and I agree with you. Nice posting……. and Nice blog, I like it
