MacBook Pros get Core 2 Duo upgrade

New MacBook Pros

Phew! Those sweet MacBook Pros just got a lot sweeter. Apple has upgraded their MacBook Pro line to include Core 2 Duo processors across the board, delivering up to 39% faster performance than the previous generation.

Some things to note:

  • The new MBPs have double the RAM - 1GB for the 15" 2.16Ghz and 2GB standard with the 15" and 17" 2.33Ghz models. Max RAM you can load up on a MacBook Pro has also increased to 3GB.
  • Firewire 800 is now standard on all MacBook Pros. Great news for the video professional.
  • Double-layer SuperDrives are now also standard fare for Apple’s pro-level laptops.
  • Hard drives also got an upgrade - 120GB and 160GB on the 15" and 17" respectively.

Apple also introduced a Magsafe Airline Power Adaptor, an adaptor that is compatible with most airline seats power ports. Targeted at the mobile Apple laptop user, the adaptor will cost USD59.

Prices for the new MacBook Pros remain the same. It’s even more value-for-money now (if you can consider RM10k on a laptop value-for-money). So tempted to buy a MacBook Pro instead of its little brother…

Thanks Jinny for the heads up!

Update: Chau Ging from CG Computers says that there’s no official word from Apple on the pricing. But since the US prices didn’t increase I don’t think they should have a different price in Malaysia too. Also, Andrew from machines says that they expect to receive their first Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros (15") in 3 weeks time.

Do you know how much it will cost me for the lowest version in the Macbook Pro stable (in RM that it)? The 15.4″, 2.16Ghz version.. Need a notebook ASAP and I’ve the option to go for either Dell D820 or Macbook Pro.. pricewise in UK is not that much a different (could get the educational discount with 3 yr warranty) .. I’m going back to KL for good in January..

  2. Hi Wiraone, the most affordable MacBook Pro will cost your RM7,899 in Malaysia. I think that you may get a better deal in the UK though. Plus Apple doesn’t have the educational discount programme here. You can check out the prices at http://www.macasia.com.my.

Is it available now in KL? Or the current stock in most of the dealer is still the old spec?

  6. [...] Apple yesterday upgraded its MacBook line to the Core 2 Duo processor, following up on a similar update to its MacBook Pro line. This means that Apple’s entire portable line comes standard with Core 2 Duo chips. The Mac maker says the new Intel processors give the MacBooks a 25% performance boost at the same old prices. Yay!
