GooTube: A $1.65 billion dollar deal

GooTube

Wow. So I get back from my vacation and fire up my newsreader and what do I see? Google buys YouTube for US $1.65 billion bucks! This isn’t exactly Mac news, I know, but Google is such a big deal I had to post about it.

The deal has been rumoured for days but the two companies made an official announcement on Monday. Google issued a press release while Steve Chen and Chad Hurley posted a video message on, you guessed it, YouTube.

Hurley says that “two kings have gotten together” (kings of video and search) and will provide even better service in the online video space. But besides providing the deep pockets, it isn’t clear how Google will put to use it’s new investment.

Maybe with Google CEO Eric Schmidt on the board of Apple, Apple may tie up with YouTube to provide one-click publishing of our iMovies? Err, maybe I’ll leave the speculation to others.

Macs Inside Google

In unrelated news, Google has launched their official Google Mac blog. In the blog’s first post, the Googlers emphasise the importance of Mac users to the company and promised to develop new products and services for Mac users. You can check out the first results of the new Mac Engineering team at http://www.google.com/mac.html

Good to know that the world’s richest company takes us Mac users seriously :)
