Apple updates iMac and Mac Mini ahead of Showtime

Steve Jobs is chuckling to himself, taunting the Apple rumour sites, as Apple unveils updated iMacs less than a week ahead of its Showtime event, scheduled for September 12.

The updated iMacs feature Intel Core 2 Duo processors across the board which Apple claims to deliver up to 50% faster performance than the previous iMac. On top of that they’ve dropped the price on the most basic iMac (17″ 1.83Ghz) down to USD $999.

On top of that, they’ve added a monster 24″ iMac to the family which Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing says is “the fastest, biggest and brightest iMac we’ve ever made.”

Just to give you an idea of how large 24 inches is, go look for a copy of The Star. Now open it up and hold it in front of you. Now imagine that your screen is that huge. *drool* In related news, Jinny is so excited she wants to sell her soul. His Steve-ness is pleased with your allegiance, Jinny.

At the same time, Apple also quietly updated its Mac Minis. They all sport Core Duo processors now, at no additional cost. Thanks Steve! Watch this space for Malaysian pricing and availability.

Steve mocks us

Steve knows that we can hardly keep our pants on now that the word on the September 12 ‘Showtime’ event is out. Previous rumours suggested that Apple will unveil a new 23″ iMac then, but they were off by an inch and about a week.

So what will Apple unveil at the event? Everybody thinks movies and a video iPod to go with it. Maybe even a new Mac Mini set-top DVR type of box. But Steve mocks us and tells us: think bigger.

Can’t wait for Showtime!

  1. Hahaha… hopefully my soul is worth a 24″ iMac :P

I’m tempted to get one of these new Intel iMacs, but I wonder how their reliability/failure rates compare to the iMac G5s.

I realise that people happy with their iMacs never complain/rarely comment on-line, so the horror stories of overheating etc. iMacs from disappointed customers perhaps creates a misleading image of poor iMac quality control. Any local satisfied iMac users care to share your experience? Thanks.

  3. Hi Aziz, thanks for dropping by and posting your question here.

Unfortunately, I’m afraid that my blog does not get that much traffic (not yet anyway!) to the point your question will be answered by one of my readers. You’re better off posting your question in the myMUG forum, in the Desktops section. In fact, you can see some complaints and kudos of the iMacs in that forum itself.

    Drop by again!

  4. [...] Think Secret was one of the first rumour sites to predict new iPods and a 23″ iMac. However, Apple jumped the gun and announced updates to the iMacs the week before the event. If you think about it, this has to mean that Apple has got so much stuff to announce tomorrow that they needed to get the iMac announcement out of the way first. Hmm… [...]

  5. [...] Apple’s recent introduction of updates to its iMac lineup, including the new drool-inducing 24-inch beauty, will be available in Malaysia by October. This delay is partly due to certification process by the authorities because of its built-in Bluetooth connectivity, a reliable source tells myMacBUZZ. [...]
