Symantec: No Mac viruses exist

Symantec: Be Fearless

Be Fearless. That’s Symantec Corp’s tagline that I really like. Recently their blog basically told Mac users to be fearless, there are no viruses for Mac OS X:

Simply put, at the time of writing this article, there are no file-infecting viruses that can infect Mac OS X.

The entry on their Security Response blog went on to explain that the stuff that’s claimed to be ‘viruses’ for Macs are in fact “worms”, “security threats” and “malicious code” which are not the same as viruses.

The point of this post is basically to educate commenters on the correct terminology for such things, but the take away from it was that, and I quote again, “there are no file-infecting viruses that can infect Mac OS X”.

But before us Mac fans get too carried away, the author rightly points out that Mac users should still take steps to protect themselves, as I would advise too.

That last footnote aside, PC users, are you ready to get a Mac?

  1. Even if there is a working effective virus, chances are still quite low for an infection don’t you think?

  2. Yes, but it’s better to be safe than sorry… and you should always backup all your files.

  3. aah that I do religiously :)
